Rainy-day enrichment

Snuffle mats and simple indoor games for days when the weather wins. Something to keep your dog busy when the walk is short and the rain isn't.

What is a snuffle mat?

A fabric mat full of folds and flaps. You scatter dry food or small treats into it, and your dog sniffs them out. It's a simple way to make a meal or snack last longer, and it gives your dog something to do on a day stuck indoors.

What can I put in it?

Dry food or small, dry treats. Count them as part of your dog's daily food, not on top of it. Steer clear of chocolate, grapes, raisins, onion and garlic, which are toxic to dogs.

Do I need to stay with my dog?

Yes. Supervise your dog while they use it, and take it away if they start chewing it rather than sniffing. Check it for damage before each use.

Any other rainy-day ideas?

  • Hide a few treats around one room and let your dog sniff them out.
  • Roll treats up in an old towel for them to unroll.
  • Scatter part of their dinner on a clean floor instead of using a bowl.
  • Run a short training session. Learning something new gives your dog plenty to think about.
